Year 2019 has been linked with the rollout of fifth generation technology (5G). Industry experts have embarked on their 5G journey and are aspiring to see their efforts bear fruit in 2019. However, other trends are expected to impact the telecommunications industry. Technological advances have created what is dubbed the ‘digital era’ and are paving the way for significant IT and network architecture changes in 2019.

In times when headlines are making the most of technology buzzwords, it is essential to filter some of the noise and to focus on key drivers behind the ongoing transformation in our industry. Technology has evolved at such a rapid pace over the last 10 years that it has caused severe disruption across almost every major industry globally. The general consensus is that enterprises need to embrace new technologies in order to remain competitive and relevant. Businesses that don’t adapt or evolve will simply not survive.

A global shortage of unused IPv4 addresses is a serious problem affecting the internet today. We generally don’t think about it when we look at our smartphones or computers, but these devices rely on a massive communications infrastructure that depends on a system of globally unique addresses. Computers need to know which device or webserver we’re asking them to connect to, and routers need to know where to forward the data traffic that crosses a network. This crucial role of signifying a unique destination for internet traffic is performed by IP addresses.
