The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) of the United Arab Emirates and The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), signed an agreement on 29 June 2020 to establish an International Center of Digital Innovation, known as I-CoDI.

After discussing the impact that COVID-19 has had on 5G deployment from the point of view of operators and vendors, the panel’s moderators, Toni Eid, Founder of Telecom Review and CEO of Trace Media asked the panelists whether they think that 5G played a certain role during the pandemic.

Autonomous and connected cars have already been trialed on the streets of many countries over the past half-decade. Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and the internet of things (IoT) have made way for the surge in the trialing and adoption of autonomous vehicles. It has been forecasted that by 2021, over 380 million connected cars will take to the streets. In fact, after the smartphone and the tablet, the connected car has been deemed as one of the most rapid-growing technological device.

The first part of the panel highlighted the causes of delay in 5G deployment and the consequences on the industry, namely on operators and vendors. Toni Eid, Founder of Telecom Review and CEO of Trace Media, who was the panel’s moderator, steered the conversation to know all of the panelists’ opinion.

The last part of the panel answered a futuristic question. How the response to COVID-19 would have been if 5G was already deployed? An Jian, President of Carrier Business Group, Huawei Middle East Region mentioned China as an example of how 5G helped in the intervention to counter the pandemic.

The term IoT (internet of things) is widely recognized, and activity in the market to develop and install IoT solutions has grown exponentially over the last decade. The use of IoT for business operations has already been proven to deliver immense value. In spite of this success, there are increasing instances of IoT project failures. For a variety of reasons, it is estimated that nearly three-quarters of all IoT projects started will not be considered successful by the organizations using them.

In order to fulfil its commitment to support Arab countries and all stakeholders in facing the COVID-19 pandemic through digital technologies and highlight their efforts in this matter, the Arab Information and Communication Technologies Organization (AICTO) and the Technical Secretariat of the Council of Arab Ministers organized in partnership with ESCWA the first Arab Webinar entitled “ICT fighting Covid-19: Arab initiatives and success stories”. The webinar allowed all stakeholders in the region to present their experiences and share best practices to confront the coronavirus pandemic.
